To work safely in a risky environment, it is necessary to take the necessary precautions. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, knowing that the essential accessories vary depending on the specificities of the work . In addition to the overalls, shoes and glasses, the choice of gloves should also not be taken lightly, the use of hands being inherent to all work. How to choose the right chemical protection gloves? Find out the answers in this article.

Browse our selection of work gloves to find the right protection you need. Whether you are looking for nitrile gloves, handling gloves, cut-resistant gloves, latex gloves, anti-cold gloves, anti-heat gloves, leather work gloves, anti-impact gloves impact, disposable gloves, welding gloves or standard EN 374 which determines resistance to penetration, permeation and degradation. Made up of several parts, the latter was subject to modifications at the end of 2016 to implement more precise testing methods.

The standard EN - 374-1: 2003 becomes EN ISO 374-1: 2016, with:

  • Tests for resistance against the penetration of dangerous chemicals and micro-organisms
  • Tests for resistance against 18 chemical substances (the old version only had 12, with codes ranging from A to L)

Chemical protection gloves are classified into three categories:

  • Type A for equipment displaying optimal resistance to the penetration of at least 6 chemical substances, with a permeation time of more than 30 minutes
  • Type B for protective gloves ensuring resistance to the penetration of 3 chemical substances at least, with a permeation time greater than 30 minutes
  • Type C for accessories guaranteeing a permeation time of more than 10 minutes for at least one chemical substance

Generally, type B and C gloves only concern the disposable versions.

The most used materials

Among the preferred materials, we distinguish:

  • Nitrile, appreciated for its increased level of resistance, particularly against hydrocarbons
  • Latex, renowned for the optimal level of resistance it displays against chemicals, tears and wear (to be avoided in the presence of fatty or oily products)
  • Butyl, known to resist particularly toxic and aggressive chemicals
  • Vinyl (or PVC), which resists acids, alcohols and bases
  • Neoprene, displaying a high level of resistance to acids and bases

Precautions to take against chemicals

Before each use, it is important to always check the condition of chemical protection gloves with great care. A perforation, even minimal, could have serious consequences on the worker's health.

Because an accident can always happen, it is better to have on hand a first aid kit designed specifically for the chemical industry.

Chemical protective gloves are essential equipment to ensure the safety of workers when handling chemicals. Available in various renowned brands such as Ansell, Portwest, Uvex, and Mapa, these gloves offer effective protection against chemical hazards. Some models, like Ansell's AlphaTec gloves, feature a neoprene coating that ensures optimal resistance to harsh chemicals. Selection of glove material is essential depending on the nature of the handling, and cotton gloves can also be used for specific tasks. The finish and cuff of the gloves, available as a set or pair, are designed to ensure optimal fit and maximum protection.

Chemical protective gloves are often used in sectors such as chemistry, handling of hazardous products, industrial cleaning, and mechanics. User reviews often guide the choice by highlighting the quality, comfort and effectiveness of these gloves in demanding chemical conditions. The availability of these PPE in batches or individually ensures efficient management of the necessary equipment in the workplace. In summary, chemical protection gloves, whether neoprene, cotton, or other specific materials, represent an essential barrier to guarantee the safety of workers exposed to chemical risks in various professional contexts.
