On a construction site such as a section of road under construction or a building under construction, anyone working there on foot must wear a high visibility clothing. The latter allows him to be seen in dangerous situations, day and night.

For cool seasons, there is PPE (personal protective equipment) that offer protection both against the dangers, but also against the cold. High visibility sweatshirts are one of them. They are essential for risky interventions in winter or autumn.

By definition, a construction site is a place where construction, repair, etc. work takes place (e.g. construction site, demolition of a building, shipyard, etc.). It is also a place where construction materials are stored.

On this place in question, people and vehicles can circulate, in particular machinery and heavy goods vehicles coming and going quite frequently. Staff are also present on site to carry out the work. According to the regulations in force, a person passing through or working on a construction site must be visible to all for their safety and that of others.

The Labor Code stipulates that visibility of personnel on site is mandatory apart from wearing PPE. This obligation is mentioned in black and white in article 4321-1. The task of ensuring compliance with these regulations therefore falls to the employer or the managers present on site. Among other things, they must provide their employees with high-visibility clothing or sweatshirts.

Variants of high visibility sweatshirts

High visibility sweatshirts are available for all tastes, although it is above all a safety garment in the same way as PPE. There are indeed hooded models which are very practical during harsh, cold winters. The advantage of this type of high visibility sweatshirt is that it is in a bright and showy color, apart from the fact that it has fluorescent bands.

Other models are more classic with a round neck and ribbed cuffs. The fabric is entirely cotton with the exception, like the previous model, of the fluorescent stripes in polyester. For the more cautious, there are high visibility sweatshirts with chin guards with a front zipper and button closures for the hands.

When to put on the high visibility sweatshirt?

The warmth and comfort provided by the high visibility sweatshirt gives it multiple uses. On the tarmac of airports, it can be seen that ramp agents are generally dressed in high visibility clothing. And given their frequent exposure to winds, the high visibility sweatshirt is the best choice depending on their working condition.

Of course, workers on site, like in a shipyard, are always dressed in a high-visibility jacket or sweatshirt. Everything is therefore in the protection provided by this garment when the weather is quite cool.

Standards for high visibility clothing

Like all other PPE, high-visibility clothing, including high-visibility sweatshirts, is subject to very specific rules. Previously governed by the EN 471 standard, and since 2013 they are under the EN ISO 20471.
