The polo shirt is a top originally designed for men. Two Frenchmen are behind its invention, namely René Lacoste and the industrialist André Gillier.

The idea of ​​inventing the polo shirt appeared with René Lacoste in 1920, when he noticed that the traditional long-sleeved shirt was no longer suitable for playing tennis. At the same time, T-shirts dressed the US Navy. The famous champion of this eponymous sport was inspired by it to design the first polo shirt. Obviously, the basic model was a shirt, of which he shortened the sleeves. However, he was struck by the casual and lightness of the t-shirt, and he deduced that a t-shirt with a collar would be the ideal sportswear for tennis. In 1931, the marketing of polo shirts began.

As for the t-shirt, it is an invention inspired by US Navy sailor tops. However, the marinière is in no way a t-shirt. But it was in the 1930s that the first t-shirts began to appear. Its particularity is its simple cut in the shape of a "T" which gives it over time its name of t-shirt or t-shirt even if in its beginnings, it was called otherwise: Skivvies, Jim shirt or gob shirt.

The popularization of the T-shirt in Europe, on the other hand, comes from the American GIs of the Second World War. Moreover, they have greatly contributed to its entry on the old continent and in particular, in the male wardrobe.
