Nowadays, wearing work shoes has become mandatory in most trades. And how ? These shoes protect the feet from various accidents that can occur in the workplace, such as falling objects, muscle injuries, fractures, sprains, etc.

That's why many brands are competing to provide workers with even more durable and high-performance footwear. But aware of current environmental issues, these companies have launched a range of ecological safety shoes, in order to contribute to a more virtuous and respectful industry.

The characteristics of ecological safety shoes

Ecological safety shoes are shoes made from recycled and bio-based raw materials. From the sole to the upper, including the laces, almost all the materials are derived from plastic bottles, cups and recycled shoes. There are also other raw materials such as polyester or recycled cotton from textile production scraps, hessian, flannel, organic cotton, vegetable fibers, synthetic leather, or poly-green. Shoes made from these materials are not only ecological, but also comfortable, durable, breathable, washable and very resistant.

Why wear ecological safety shoes?

Since we always tend to throw away our worn or obsolete shoes, this eco-responsible strategy makes it possible to offer a circular manufacturing model, which greatly limits the 'environmental impact. These shoes combine safety and ecology, while providing you with the necessary comfort in the performance of your tasks. In addition, wearing ecological shoes revalues recyclable waste while providing a very attractive aesthetic value. It also contributes to energy savings and improved environmental conservation.

Standards for ecological safety shoes

Like all work shoes, ecological shoes also meet various regulatory and environmental requirements such as:

The EN ISO 20345: 2011 standard which certifies the solidity, safety, comfort, ergonomics and slip resistance of shoes. In this standard are these few requirements including:

Category SB: for work on flat ground, in contact with mineral oils and hydrocarbons. It also certifies the resistance of the shoes to a crushing force of 15 kN and the presence of a protective toe cap up to 200 joules.

The category S1: for working in dry places, and concerns the fundamental characteristics, the antistatic properties, the shock absorption in the heels, the resistance to hydrocarbons and the closed back.

The category S1P: for light work and work in interior such as crafts, mechanics, logistics and light industry. It has all the features of the S1 version, with the addition of an anti-abrasion and anti-perforation sole, which protects against the penetration of sharp objects, friction and scratches.

The category S2: for work in humid environments, such as that of carriers, landscapers, or craftsmen working outside. It certifies the presence of a water-repellent upper that keeps your feet dry for up to an hour of exposure to the rain. S2 shoes also have energy absorbers in the heels and an antistatic capacity, and are resistant to oils and hydrocarbons.

The category S3: suitable for multiple professional activities such as either in the field of industry, construction, building or green spaces. It has all the characteristics of the S2 standard, with an anti-perforation sole and a studded sole.

The category S4 and S5: for those who work in difficult environments (cold, humidity, liquid splashes, slippery and muddy floors ).

The HRO standard: which requires the presence of an outsole resistant to heat on contact up to 300°C. HRO footwear is recommended for blacksmiths, boilermakers, welders, heating engineers, etc.

The CI standard : which certifies the presence of an insulating sole against the cold down to -10 °C.

The WRU standard: which confirms the waterproofness of shoes.

The SRC standard: which certifies the resistance of shoes to slipping, on a ceramic floor covered with detergent and water; and on a steel floor covered with glycerin.

The ESD standard: which concerns footwear that dissipates electrical charges.

And finally, the ECO Label certification, which attests to the limitation of environmental impacts and the performance of the shoes.

Where to get ecological safety shoes?

You can buy your eco-responsible shoes from distributor networks, specialized PPE stores, in large surfaces or via internet. You will find models for men and women, with characteristics specific to each profession. The shoes also come in different designs and colors, and where you can choose from top brands like Diadora, Safety Jogger, Puma or strong>Parade.

The maintenance of ecological safety shoes

Although eco-responsible shoes tend to be more durable, it is always better to maintain them well so that they can always keep their protective functions. To do this, you must clean them regularly after each use. The best is to clean them by hand, then dry them in a room at room temperature. For the soles, you must constantly check their condition and change them if they are too damaged.

Then, if the shoes are too worn and can no longer be reused, you can take them to the dedicated containers where they will be recycled and perhaps contribute to the manufacture of other ecological shoes .
