The history of waiter work clothes

Why do we call a work overall?

Overalls have their own history as workwear. Massively used and purchased, it became the first work garment adopted regardless of the trade.

Who invented overalls?

The origin of overalls has many versions. We only know that the dark blue color was difficult to realize and produce. If we look at one of the versions, overalls were invented in the XVIII? century by Johann Jacob Diesbach. More precisely between 1700 and 1704, this discovery is the result of a failed experiment.

The mixture of pigments between iron sulphate, potash, cochineal and alum was to lead to Florence lacquer (carmine color). Diesbach, running out of potash, uses a mixture of solution with animal blood. The prepared preparation turns purple and blue giving the Prussian blue. This mixing error has offered many advantages over the years.

Why adopt work overalls?

A revolutionary costume

The color "working blue" owes its name to Prussian blue, used in the dyeing of professional clothing. Its use dates back to the industrial revolution. The patronage of this period offered Prussian blue colored clothing, generally used by sailors, postmen, soldiers, etc.

Original work clothes for men and women

The overalls becomes a unique garment with a practical and timeless color. This color also allows for easy maintenance. The color Prussian blue is used mainly because it is not very dirty, the stains are not very visible. It also enjoys economic and predominant success, because the manufacture of the garment is done at a lower cost. For years, overalls are no longer just "blue", you can find this type of clothing in different colors.

It is adopted by both men and women. It adapts to all trades and environments. It is found in catering rather in the practical parts, in the back office: delivery, washing up, maintenance, etc.

How does a waiter dress?

Many professions are quite meticulous and strict in wearing workwear. Mechanic work, for example, requires appropriate attire. Wearing protective equipment such as safety shoes and durable coveralls are a must.

Since the waiters are in direct contact with the customers, they represent the notoriety and the image of the establishment. In this case, their work clothes must comply with it.

Professional attire in catering

The dress of the waiters remains a key element for distinguishing oneself and displaying a professional image of the brand.

Waiter and waitress outfit

The style of waiter and waitress outfits depends entirely on the type of establishment and occupation. The costume worn by waiters in a palace differs from that in a brasserie, for example.

In a brewery

Waiter/waitress outfits are mostly casual. They wear black trousers or a skirt with a white or black blouse, accompanied by dark professional shoes.

In a bistro

Clothing should be practical and comfortable. However, waiter outfits vary depending on the category of restaurant. If the establishment is traditional, the clothes of the waiters must be sober and classic, including the shoes. For themed restaurants, the managers are responsible for the outfits of the waiters and waitresses.

In a modern bar

The clothing of the waiter or bartender is designated by the owner of the establishment. The outfits generally consist of a suit or a suit in a dark color accompanied by a white blouse. Sometimes waiters wear t-shirts and jeans for a casual look.
