How to choose the right painter's suit?

Paint is one of the very toxic products not only for the skin, but also for the respiratory tract. Wearing suitable work clothes, in particular a painter's coverall, is therefore essential.

Paint suit: what is it?

Like goggles and protective masks, painter overalls are part of the PPE (personal protective equipment) intended for painters. These garments provide effective protection against dirt and all kinds of chemical attacks. Unlike the overalls, most of these suits are white in color. This is why they are known as working whites. Would you like to buy one? Consider the following information.

The different categories of painting clothes

Overalls or painter overalls are classified into three well-defined categories by European Directive 89/686/EEC according to the risks involved:

  • Category 1: for minimal risks
  • Category 2: for intermediate risks
  • Category 3: for irreversible or serious risks

Standards are even stricter for spray paint. In this case, you must wear a disposable coverall with hood belonging to category 3.

The three main models of painter's coveralls with sleeves for women and men

Painter coveralls or dungarees come in 3 types:

Lightweight disposable paint overalls

These models of coveralls and work overalls are designed with non-woven fabric. They go in the trash after a few days of use. Featuring elastic sleeve ends, these garments prevent paint from staining your clothes and your body. In addition, their zippers make them easy to put on.

Reusable and washable protective suits

These work coveralls are either made of nylon or polyester. They have elastic at the waist, sleeves and cuffs. These clothes can be machine washed. Even though their costs are a little higher than the previously mentioned models, they are worth buying because you can use them several times in various construction sites.

Breathable white coveralls or dungarees for painters

They are made of breathable fabrics such as polyamide and have a hood with drawstring closure. In addition to ensuring the protection of your clothes and your body, these coveralls or work overalls guarantee optimal breathability. Some models even have assisted ventilation to better resist any chemical risks.

You can also opt for sleeveless jumpsuits or suspender overalls. However, keep in mind that the performance of the latter is not the same as that of the models mentioned above.

Choosing the ideal painting outfit for children or adults

Choosing a painter's overall depends on several parameters:

  • Type of application (spraying, throwing, etc.)
  • The products used
  • The concentration of chemical substances

If you rarely paint or just prefer ease, the disposable coverall model is perfect for you. You can also use clothes you no longer use. For example, old jeans and a T-shirt or sweatshirt will do just fine.

In case you repaint your whole house and you don't mind washing clothes, the washable and reusable coverall is the most suitable. Prefer all the same models with a double or single quality zipper for very easy donning.

Whether you choose a disposable, washable or breathable model, choose the right size because it is difficult to work quickly if your clothes get in the way.
