The risks incurred during scientific manipulation are numerous, whether in the context of a chemical experiment or contact with toxic and microbial substances. This is why many educational establishments and laboratories require the wearing of a white coat to limit and prevent as much as possible the dangers that these products could cause. When it comes to hygiene, the work coat covers a large part of the body of those who wear them, which protects them from possible stains and splashes during their experiences of all kinds.

History

The blouse has its origins in the 19th century, where it was designated as work clothing intended for workers. At the time, it was blue in color and helped protect their owners from possible workplace accidents. A few years later, white coats were then created to differentiate workers from supervisors. The material of the first blouses was cotton, so they held up better to washing. Moreover, this material is still very popular today.

Today, the coat is used in many areas and, although it keeps the same function, it can be used in several different circumstances: in chemistry class, in a strong>laboratory, during the dissection of animals or insects, in hospital or in an industrial environment. But the most frequent use is certainly in the context of a chemical laboratory experiment.

Today, wearing a gown is almost an obligation when it comes to carrying out risky experiments. Indeed, the chemist will always be required to carry out some experiments with potentially dangerous substances for humans. The gown will have the role of preventing possible contact with these substances. Without forgetting the protection it offers against bacteria and microbes thanks to its neutral color and its material. It is also recommended to change your blouse every two days for an even more hygienic result.

As a reminder, the risks in laboratories are acids and bases, solvents, the possibilities of contamination in biology laboratories, the flame from the Bensen burner.

Characteristics of a white coat for men and women

A chemistry coat is mostly unisex, generally worn over clothing and is often made of a lightweight fabric such as polyester. Depending on the model, it may or may not have pockets, which will allow the wearer, in addition to protecting themselves, to store some belongings to have access to them at any time. These pockets can be placed on the upper or lower part of the blouse. Also, blouses can be with long or short sleeves depending on the needs and comfort of the wearer. Several lengths are available: short, above or below the knees.

How to choose a white blouse?

The choice of a blouse is based on several criteria, each more important than the other. Firstly, although most blouses are unisex, it is always advisable to check if it is compatible with your profile. Next, you need to determine what you want to use it for. As for chemists, it is more appropriate to opt for a long-sleeved blouse model, in order to guarantee optimal protection of all visible parts of the body.

In terms of comfort, a blouse that is neither too short nor too long would be ideal. When purchasing, you must therefore carefully check the dimensions and the length must be approximately at the same level as the knees, or slightly above. In all cases, the buyer is free to impose his preferences.

For the material, it is possible to buy a cotton blouse, because this material is softer and more respectful of the skin. With fragile skin, cotton is ideal, especially if you tend to sweat a lot. This material supports washing well, whether by machine or by hand, and is not easily damaged.

For greater safety, this work clothing can, for example, be combined with the wearing of safety shoes and work pants.

A white blouse in cotton or polyester?

A white coat used in the professional environment, such as in the laboratory for example, must be a type 1 model. It will therefore comply with the EN 340 standard, which is that applied for blouses for women and for men in standard laboratories. In the majority of cases, this work clothing is made from class M3 fabric. This means that as with medical clothing, the white coat must be either 100% in cotton, i.e. 65% polyester and 35% cotton, or the reverse.

The cotton work coat is suitable for sensitive skin and can be washed at high temperatures. This type of fabric resists fire well, hence its categorization in class M3. The white blouse in 100% long-staple cotton is also comfortable to wear, and the fabric is soft and supple. On the other hand, unlike the polyester-cotton blend, the white cotton coat is less acid-resistant. Medical or laboratory clothing made of polyester-cotton is light, flexible, dries quickly and has very high resistance and excellent solidity.

For optimal use and with maximum risk reduction, the white coat must be long-sleeved. It will also be fully buttoned, and ideally would be with snap buttons.
