First-time paramedics often have difficulty choosing their workwear. Paramedic clothing is indeed subject to standards as professional clothing. For those who are starting their ambulance company, they have to choose the paramedic outfits according to well-defined criteria.

The law on paramedic clothing - Polo shirts/t-shirt/pants/jacket/shoes/etc - Man / Woman

Paramedic outfits are compulsory according to the decree of February 10, 2009. All paramedics must wear professional clothing during their work only and not outside. The outfits in question consist of a paramedic pants, a top that is not necessarily professional clothing and a jacket specific to the trade. As for colors, there is no general rule, but to standardize with other paramedics, paramedic clothing is often white and blue. Ambulance companies must therefore provide their employees with ambulance uniforms that comply with these few rules.

How to choose your paramedic clothes?

The objective of paramedic outfits is to meet the needs of paramedics when they are performing their duties, but also of companies to comply with the standards in force. This often causes complications, so much so that it is sometimes difficult to combine compliance with regulations, comfort, visibility and user safety.

There is no specific standard that must be applied by paramedic clothing manufacturers. However, paramedics must be visible, because their working conditions often put them in risky situations such as roadside or nighttime intervention, for example. To do this, paramedic outfits are fitted with retro-reflective strips that reflect the light from the headlights. In this way, motorists can better distinguish ambulance personnel in the midst of an intervention.

Professional clothing complying with the EN 471 standard is therefore to be preferred for paramedics. The standard in question covers the requirements on the methods of design and testing of high visibility clothing for professional use. Nor should you skimp on solidity and resistance, two crucial points that any ambulance company should not neglect. Intensive washing, friction or contact with heat sources are factors to consider when choosing paramedic clothing.

In addition, as paramedics must wear their paramedic outfits during their working hours, it is important not to skimp on comfort. In other words, they must be adapted to the season. In the middle of winter, it is best to opt for paramedic clothing that complies with the EN 342 standard which covers professional clothing providing protection against the cold. In summer or during a rainy season, it is advisable to choose ambulance uniforms according to the standard EN 343 which concerns professional clothing protecting heavy rain, therefore waterproof.

Gloves and safety shoes are also components of paramedic clothing. And although they are not compulsory, they nevertheless provide the necessary security for paramedics in the exercise of their work.

It is common for a color to be associated with a profession. If the army adopts green camouflage, the medical corps wears either white or blue. And paramedics are part of the medical staff of a hospital center. In this sense, it is quite normal for the color of their clothes to be white or blue. This allows them to be better associated with doctors and nurses, because their role during each intervention is above all to help people who are injured or whose health is at a critical stage.

Can we customize paramedic outfits?

Ambulance companies are currently numerous and each one customizes their paramedic clothing to distinguish themselves from the others. It is therefore possible to apply a logo or the acronym of the company, or even the telephone number, why not, as long as this customization has a relationship with the company in question. However, it should be noted that it is necessary to remain modest to preserve the specificities of the outfits.
