What is Lyocell?

What is Lyocell?

What is the composition of Lyocell fabric?

It is an artificial chemical material of plant origin produced from wood pulp, mainly eucalyptus, but also other trees such as oak or birch. The cellulose in the wood pulp is chemically treated using a non-toxic solvent.

This fabric is particularly suitable for making shirts, jeans, jumpsuits, etc. If you are looking for sustainable kitchen equipment, Oxwork offers you the ESCALE jacket and the DUNES jacket, available in long-sleeved or short-sleeved versions to suit your needs.

So what is Tencel?

Tencel is the brand name under which Lyocell was first marketed. It's the same material. It is also found under the names of Lenzing Lyocell, Alceru, Newcell

Is Lyocell material production sustainable?

Lyocell is presented as an alternative to cotton, its production consumes 95% less water. 1 kg of cotton requires 5000 liters of water to grow against only 1000 liters for Lyocell. The trees used, such as eucalyptus, have low water consumption and only need the amount of rain to grow, without pesticides.

It produces 10 times more material than cotton, per cultivated hectare. In addition, generally, the wood pulp used comes from trees planted specifically for its production

The solvent used to form Lyocell fiber from cellulose is 99.7% recovered and reused in the manufacturing circuit.

In addition, it emits half the carbon dioxide compared to traditional materials.

Because it is made from wood pulp, it is also 100% biodegradable and compostable, if not mixed with other synthetic fibres. Be careful though, it is not compostable under the conditions of a particular compost.

What are the benefits of Lyocell?

Lyocell fabric has good moisture absorption, superior to cotton or silk. Thanks to this characteristic, it is said to be anti-bacterial.

It also has good resistance and good breathability similar to cotton. It is also wrinkle resistant.

This artificial ecological fiber is a more environmentally friendly substitute for viscose in the industry.

Does Lyocell make you sweat?

Contrary to what you might think, no, Lyocell does not make you sweat. It has excellent temperature regulating properties due to its good breathability, similar to cotton. It neutralizes odors and dries quickly.

Is Lyocell hot?

Another advantage: the fabric is warm in winter and pleasantly cool in summer thanks to its breathability.

What are the care, ironing and washing instructions for Lyocell garments?

Lyocell clothing is relatively easy to care for, just follow a few simple rules:

  • Keep it in a cool, ventilated place,
  • Wash it at low temperature (30),
  • It doesn't often need to be ironed. If necessary, iron it inside out, at low temperature.

Does Lyocell shrink in the wash?

From 60 during a wash, we observe a shrinkage of 5%.
