How to remove plasticized bitumen from overalls?
Tar is a coal derivative, which causes sticky, greasy black stains that are rather difficult to remove. Here are some modern techniques or grandmother's tricks to properly clean a tar stain on overalls.
Remove tar with butter or margarine
Clean the tar stain by removing as much of the tar as possible with the rounded edge of a spoon or spatula. If the tar is dry, massage the dirt with butter. Once softened, the tar will come off easily. Then, with a cloth soaked in a solution made from a tablespoon of soda crystals for a bowl of hot water, clean the grease stain. Rinse thoroughly then wash.
Removing bitumen with soda crystals
Apply a paste made of soda crystals and water to the tar stain. Gently rub the dirty part, then rinse with warm water. Repeat the operation until the stain has completely disappeared.
Remove tar with turpentine
Dab the tar stain with a cloth soaked in turpentine. Then rinse and wash.
Lemon juice
Dab the area affected by tar with a cloth soaked in lemon juice. Then rinse and dry. Use this technique on overalls in synthetic fabric.
Iron
If there is still a greasy streak, apply a large layer of paper towel, and pass an iron over everything. The paper will absorb the stain. Repeat the operation until there is no more stain by changing the paper towels. For a good result on the stain, pour talcum powder on the dirty part before applying the sheets of paper towel.
Oil and Marseille soap
Gently rub the tar stain with cooking oil, then rub the remaining stain several times with very slightly damp Marseille soap to form a kind of crust. Leave on for at least an hour, then wash normally, either by hand or in the washing machine.
Garageman's hand cleaner
Remove a tar stain by scrubbing it with a toothbrush soaked in garage hand cleaner. Then rinse and wash.
Land of Sommires
Sprinkle the greasy trace left by the bitumen with sommires clay. Allow to absorb for at least two hours, then dust off.
White spirit
Dab tar spots with white spirit. Rinse the area that is detached, then wash. This applies to a synthetic fabric especially.
Sodium tetrachloride
To remove a tar stain from colored cotton, use a cloth and sodium tetrachloride. You then find that sodium tetrachloride is very effective. However, if the fabric is white:
- Remove the bitumen with a brush
- Apply a chlorinated solvent, such as trichloroethylene, to the fabric
- Sprinkle with terre de Sommires
- Wait for the mixture to work, then remove the powder with a vacuum cleaner
To remove a tar stain from colored linen, apply a cloth soaked in sodium tetrachloride. On the other hand, for a white fabric:
- Remove the soft part of the stain with absorbent paper
- Clean the remaining part with a cloth soaked in chlorinated solvent
- Sprinkle with soil from Sommires
- Wait a few minutes
- Remove detergents with a brush
The chlorinated solvent is thus used both for overalls in cotton or in white linen.
