In the workplace, no one is immune to risks. The eyes are easy prey to external aggressions. This is why a professional is required to wear personal protective equipment, such as goggles. They block materials that could damage this sensitive organ and compromise quality vision.
Why wear protective glasses?
Its main role is to protect the eyes from possible projections of corrosive liquids, radiation, particles, and serious risks that can blind the eyes of the professional. The most common dangers are:
- mechanical risks: shocks, solid particles flying into the eyes, dust, wood or metal shavings
- risks due to radiation: ultraviolet, laser, blue light, infrared
- chemical risks: solvent splashes, corrosive products, solvents
- thermal risks: fire, heat, splashing of molten metal, cold.
Who should wear goggles?
There are areas where wearing this PPE is mandatory, as some areas are more dangerous than others, such as:
- welding: cutting molten metal or electric arc
- forest work: bucking, pruning
- the laboratory worker: handling chemicals and hazardous products
- construction: cutting, demolition, extension, tasks in extreme heat and cold
For electricians, glasses are essential protective equipment, especially when working with power tools. For them, it is the guarantee of a task carried out correctly and quickly.
Work glasses are governed by which standard?
The standard must be taken seriously, as it is the guarantee of an optimal level of protection for the professional. Safety glasses must meet the requirements of EN 166. It promises resistance against common hazards such as being dropped on a hard floor, light aging, corrosion, heat exposure, etc. It is further distinguished according to 3 classes:
- Class 1: if the glasses are worn permanently or when performing a meticulous task
- Class 2: for intermittent wear
- Class 3: for very brief use
The different types of glasses for work
They are chosen according to the risks involved and the needs of the worker. You have to take into account the shape, the degree of coverage, as well as its isolation from the danger.
The bezel plugs in
The branch bezel only protects against frontal projections. It provides eye coverage by means of a double or single lens, with or without side shields. This model does not guarantee sealing against the environment. Generally, it is made of glass and polycarbonate. It can be treated with anti-fog, with or without tinting as needed.
The glasses, mask or over-glasses
This type of goggle is equipped with a headband that molds to the shape of your skull. It guarantees a quality seal against the environment. It includes one or two eyepieces mounted in a flexible structure isolating the orbital region. The branches are replaced by an adjustable elastic. The model protects the eyes against sawdust particles and other volatile products. Systematically anti-fog, it enhances the comfort of the professional.
The face shield
It is particularly suitable for welding applications, especially against sparks and metal splashes. It is the only model that protects both the face, the eyes and part of the neck. It is not waterproof.
Models of safety glasses for plumbers and electricians
The majority of workplace accidents for plumbers and electricians are due to the lack of PPE. In order to avoid the dangers associated with volatile particles, several brands have made sure to provide professionals with the appropriate equipment.
For electricians, the glasses must be suitable for the danger of electric current. For them, safety goggles or over-goggles must have an NF EN 166 side part and it is certified for protection against electric arcs. In addition, they are instructed to wear a face shield when logging or powering up.
Plumbers, in theirwelding operations, need protective goggles or protective goggles with NF EN 166 side rim.
